Animals during World War II
During World War II the U.S. forces and other country’s employed thousands of animals they could be found in ever theater of the war. They were workers, warriors and soldiers comrades in arms. Horses, mules, and dogs were regularly employed by American forces to work on then battlefields, horses carried soldiers on patrol missions in Europe and into battle in the Philippines. Mules, trained in the United States and shipped by thousands into war zones. The back of the mules carried there food, weapons and sometimes infantry units. An estimate of twenty thousand dogs had served during the U.S. Army, Coast Guard, and Marine Corp they guarded posts and supplies, they carried messages and rescued downed piolets. Scout dogs led troops through enemy territory, exposing ambushes and saving lives of the platoon’s men. Many U.S. Military units in World War II adopted animal mascots the mascots were real pets that belonged to all the men in the squad, company, or ship.
