Pietro Badoglio
Pietro Badoglio was born Sept. 28, 1871, Grazzano Monferrato, Italy—died Nov. 1, 1956, Grazzano Badoglio [formerly Grazzano Monferrato]) general and statesman during the dictatorship of Benito Mussolini (1922–43). In September 1943 he extricated Italy from World War II by arranging an armistice with the Allies. Chief of Staff of the Italian Army from the beginning of the war until December 1940, when he resigned after the failure to conquer Greece. Subsequently he plotted against Mussolini and after the dictator's downfall in July 1943, became the first Prime Minister of the new non-Fascist government
